Happy Birthday to Katie!

Dear Katie,

Happy birthday, sweetie! Today you are seven. It really feels like you've left the little girl stage now...we rarely call you "Katie Bug" anymore. There was a time when I couldn't even fathom this stage of life with you. And now, here we are! You are such a delight to our family, and we are so grateful for you.

You definitely have that first grade smile, with your missing teeth. Back in January you lost two in one week. You are just about to loose another one, which will bring your total up to six.

You requested your birthday cake to be strawberry flavored, with white frosting and gummy strawberries to decorate it. You birthday dinner was homemade bean 'n' bacon soup and macaroni and cheese, two of your favorites.

You have really grown in your willingness to be helpful around the house and with your brother and sister. It shows that you are aware of others' needs, not just your own desires. It's a huge blessing to see you pitching in with a cheerful heart, especially when you are not asked. The other day, you helped Silas into his sweatshirt and even zipped it up, without my prompting. You are getting allowance now, too, which provides lessons in decision making, saving, and giving.

Your reading ability grew a lot this year. At the beginning of the school year, you were hesitant and somewhat unwilling to practice reading. Now, you pick up books on your own, and sometimes read to Silas and Ellie. You like to read road signs, and I see your eyes scanning things to read when we are out doing errands. Because of your new ability, we got you your first big girl Bible.

As part of home school this year, we have worked together on drawing. Some of the lessons proved to be difficult for both of us, but that did not curb your appetite for loving to draw. For several days, you opened a dress shop. You designed and colored outfits and then sold them to us, even taking special orders for picky customers. You wrote a story with pictures for Audrey's birthday, inspired by a video you saw in the "Kipper the Dog" series. You even tried making your own board game, spending about three hours total on it in one day. Daddy and I love watching the creative mind God has given you pour forth!

Katie, we love witnessing your faith in the Lord, your appreciation for others, and your academic abilities grow. It is a blessing as parents to see the Lord transform you from being a little girl to becoming a young lady. We love you so much. Happy, happy birthday.

Love, Mommy
